2007 Memorial Day Tournament

 

Both San Diego Teams Make Monday; Gold Wins Again

The 2 teams that traveled to New York for the 22nd annual New York Emperors Stickball League Memorial Day Tournament showed they can compete with the best teams from around the world. The YoungStars went 4-1-1 in Round Robin play, beating the Ravens, Gold, Puerto Rico Tainos and the Latin Rascals (from FL). Their loss was against the Emperors and their tie was against the Miami Hurricanes. The Whompers went 6-0 in Round Robin play beating the Bandits, Royals, Knights, Puerto Rico Rookies, Miami Hurricanes and the Manhattan All Stars.

On Monday the seeding was as follows:

  1. Whompers
  2. Ravens
  3. PR Rookies
  4. YoungStars
  5. Leland Legends
  6. Gold
  7. Emperors
  8. Knights

**Teams that didn't make Monday's playoffs were Miami Hurricanes, Royals, Bandits, Stem, Latin Rascals, PR Tainos, Deltona Rockets, Jersey Saints and Manhattan All Stars.

Monday came and meant lose and go home. In the morning games of the first round, the defending champs gold beat the PR Rookies 5-2. In the other game, Willie Blas of the YoungStars hit a 2-run HR but got one of the runs taken away for failing to touch 2nd base. Leland couldn't score so it didn't matter, the YoungStars won the game 1-0.

In the 11am games, the Emperors lost to their former teammates on the Ravens 3-2. The Knights beat the Whompers 3-2 in the other game on a 2-out 7th inning 2-run single on a towering fly ball that landed between 2 fielders calling for the ball. Based upon record, the Whompers took 5th place for the tournament.

In the semifinals, Gold got their revenge on the YoungStars by beating them 2-0. The YoungStars couldn't get any offense going and finished in 3rd place for the tournament. The Ravens beat the Knights 5-0 in the other semifinal game.

In the championship it was Gold domination again. Gold won the game 7-0 behind Pito Lipset, who was named the tournament MVP.
